What Is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs Surgery is an advanced technique used to treat common types of skin cancer. During the procedure, thin layers of skin are removed and examined under a microscope in real-time to ensure all cancerous tissue is eliminated, while sparing as much healthy skin as possible. This meticulous process makes Mohs Surgery ideal for skin cancers in cosmetically sensitive or high-risk areas, such as the face, neck, scalp, and hands.

Mohs Surgery is commonly used for:

• Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most frequent type of skin cancer
• Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Often found on sun-exposed areas
• Recurrent Skin Cancer: Cancer that has returned after previous treatment

What to Expect During Mohs Surgery

1. Consultation: During your initial appointment, we’ll evaluate your skin cancer diagnosis and determine whether Mohs Surgery is the most effective treatment for your condition.

2. Procedure: Mohs Surgery involves the following steps:

• Step 1: The visible portion of the tumor is removed
• Step 2: A layer of surrounding tissue is carefully excised and examined under a microscope
• Step 3: If cancer cells remain, additional layers are removed and analyzed until no cancerous tissue is detected

3. Reconstruction: Once all cancerous tissue is removed, we’ll repair the area to minimize scarring and achieve a natural appearance.

4. Recovery: Patients typically experience mild discomfort. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided to ensure proper healing.
